Weight Classes in Combat Sports

Boxing

In boxing, a weight class is a division of boxers based on their weight. The eight traditional weight divisions for men are:

  • Flyweight
  • Bantamweight
  • Featherweight
  • Lightweight
  • Welterweight
  • Middleweight
  • Light heavyweight
  • Heavyweight

Over time, more divisions have been added, and professional governing bodies now recognize a total of 17 weight classes for men and 10 weight classes for women.

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)

In MMA, the UFC currently has 12 weight classes for men and women. Fighters are grouped into weight classes based on their weight, and they must weigh in under a desired limit before a fight.
