Troubled halfback granted diversion after violent altercation
Kelleher allegedly assaulted a 37-year-old woman during a violent altercation at their home in June last year
Former All Black Byron Kelleher has been granted diversion and had his charges dismissed after being arrested for assault in Auckland last year.
The 57-cap halfback, who played his last test for the national team in 2007 and retired from all rugby in 2012, was facing charges of assault and wilful damage. The charges relate to an incident that occurred at his home in June last year, in which he allegedly assaulted a 37-year-old woman.
According to AFP's report of the trial, the court found that Kelleher attacked the woman while under the influence of alcohol. She said he had dragged her down the corridor by her hair.
Kelleher was granted diversion on the condition that he attends alcohol counselling and completes 120 hours of community service. If he complies with these conditions, the charges against him will be dismissed.
This is not the first time that Kelleher has been in trouble with the law. In 2006, he was fined $5000 for drink driving. He was also involved in a bar fight in 2007, which resulted in him being banned from the All Blacks for six months.
Kelleher's lawyer, Marie Dyhrberg QC, said her client was "remorseful" for his actions and was "committed to addressing his alcohol issues."
"He is a good man who made a mistake," Dyhrberg said. "He is now focused on getting his life back on track."
